Battle Los Angeles (2011) Review

Battle Los Angeles is a gripping and intense action movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The movie follows a group of Marines who are sent to Los Angeles to fight against an alien invasion. The special effects are fantastic and the action is non-stop. The acting is also very good, with Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez leading the way. Battle Los Angeles is an exciting and well-made action movie that is sure to entertain.

Whilst Battle: Los Angeles is a sci-fi movie you could almost remove the aliens and replace them with any earth bound enemy and really it would’nt make a massive difference. Sure the aliens and their tech make for some interesting sfx and visuals but the sci-fi element of this movie very much takes back seat to the action element of it. We don’t get to know a whole lot about the aliens except they’re very weird looking and are generally unfriendly. That pretty much says it all i guess.

Now one area where Battle: LA excels at is sfx. Being a huge blockbuster flick with millions being spent on it’s production, you’d expect the effects to be crazy good and yeah, they are. Never does anything look false (or as faithful as an alien invasion can look) or CGI-like. Kudos on that front.

Now just for the record Battle: LA is not scary, it’s an action sci-fi movie, that’s not really surprising i know but i thought it may be worth mentioning. There certainly are some mild suspenseful moments though but nothing that’ll have you jumping out of the chair.

The acting quality is solid and the characters are fleshed out well. Most of the dialogue is situational and revolves around the Marines trying to cope with their ordeal. Of course there is the whole military bonding issue which is dealt with. Grown men fighting and dying with each other and how one soldier has to take responsibility for the men under him. All of this is covered but under the umbrella of an alien invasion on American home turf.

To conclude Battle: LA is far from the most cerebral piece of sci-fi that I’ve ever watched but don’t let that put you off, it’s a fast paced ride that any movie fan should enjoy to some extent. Recommended.
