Mega Piranha (2009) Review

Mega Piranha is a 2010 American made-for-television disaster horror comedy film directed by Eric Forsberg and starring Tiffany, Paul Logan, Barry Williams, and Graham Clarke. The film premiered on the Syfy channel on April 10, 2010.

The plot of the film revolves around a school of giant piranhas that escape from the Amazon and make their way to Florida, where they begin to wreak havoc. The film received negative reviews from critics, who criticized the film’s acting, writing, and special effects. However, some critics did find the film to be entertaining in a “so bad it’s good” sort of way.

Mega Piranha is so bad i don’t know where to begin. Firstly the storyline is incoherent, illogical, non-sensical, it’s just a major slab of total fantasy bullshit. A kid could easily see straight through the holes in it’s storyline. It’s bad, really bad. So if your prepared to suspend belief is it any good then? No, it’s not. the acting quality is woeful, truly just awful. Very disjointed unbelievable performances all round. It’s got Tiffany in it, you know the pop star form the 80’s, that truth be told most kids today won’t have clue of. The actors portraying the Venezuelan bad guys put in a decent show right enough but everybody else is just terrible.

The special effects are pitiful also. They look like they’ve been done by an amateur photoshopper. This movie was made for TV by The Asylum, who make spin-off, rip-off movies on a budget of $100 (the packaging always looks top notch though) that almost always suck. In fact i can’t remember one of their movies that was any good. I am Omega probably being the best of them but that ain’t saying much.

There seems to be a lot of inconsistency with the piranha’s themselves, sometimes they seem fairly small, like say the size of a dog, then 2 seconds later they’re the size of a house. Oh and look out for the scene where a piranha impales itself on a lighthouse, that has to be one of the naffest CGI sequences I’ve seen for a long time. Piranha’s will randomly jump out the water and destroy houses, boats, you name it… It’s just way, way too far fetched to be enjoyable.

Mega Piranha is one one of those movies we’ve all seen. A movie that is so bad, that it’s actually fucking awful. It is really crap. I cannot recommend you to avoid this one strongly enough. Maybe folks who liked the Mega Shark movies may get something from this, but seriously, for everybody else avoid.

Overall, Mega Piranha is a campy, cheesy, and enjoyable disaster horror film that is sure to please fans of the genre. The film’s over-the-top special effects and bad acting are offset by its sense of humor, making for an enjoyable watch.
