Mirrors (2008) Review

“Mirrors” is a 2008 American supernatural horror film directed by Alexandre Aja, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Paula Patton, and Amy Smart. The film was written by Aja, Gregory Levasseur, and Carl Ellsworth, based on the 2003 South Korean film Into the Mirror.

The film revolves around an ex-cop, Ben Carson (Sutherland), who takes a job as a security guard at an abandoned shopping mall. Soon after, he starts seeing horrifying reflections of himself in the mirrors, which leads him to believe that the mall is haunted. Carson tries to solve the mystery, but the more he investigates, the more dangerous it becomes.

Whilst there may not be much gore in this movie, what is there’s strong and vivid. Mirrors really isn’t a gore fest though, it plays for good old fashioned frights and it does it pretty well. There’s a few moments, like when Ben does his first night shift in the department building, that the sense of eeriness is palpable. Not to mention the creepiness of having your mirror image stalking you everywhere you go. It’s a great concept, perhaps not that original but it is great and it’s executed well.

The movie’s pacing is decent enough, although i do feel it’s a bit slow to get the ball rolling at the start but when it does, it keeps going at a pace that’ll keep you hooked till the very end. The ending is so-so, i guess some people might love it other will hate it. I thought it was OK.

“Mirrors” is a suspenseful and scary film that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Sutherland gives a great performance, and the film’s special effects are top-notch. If you’re looking for a good horror film to watch, “Mirrors” is definitely worth checking out.

So to wrap up, Mirrors has a decent premise with good characters, great (if minimal) gore and solid acting. It’s going to be difficult not to recommend this one. Both thumbs up.
