Piranha 3DD is a 2012 American 3D horror comedy film directed by John Gulager from a screenplay by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. It is a sequel to the 2010 film Piranha 3D and stars Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, David Koechner, Meagan Tandy, Chris Zylka, and Katrina Bowden.
The film follows a group of strangers who find themselves stranded at a water park that has been invaded by deadly piranhas. As the body count rises, the survivors must band together to escape the flesh-eating fish.
Well i have to confess that i really liked the first Piranha 3D. It was a fun, gory, menacing, somewhat schlocky flick, packed full of more hot women that any red blooded guy could handle in a month. It was the recipe of WIN. Sadly Piranha 3DD doesn’t quite capture the magic of it’s original. It has it’s moments for sure but in general this movie doesn’t grab you the same way the original did.
The main characters here are pretty uninteresting to be frank, none of them stand out as being particularly memorable. Indeed some of the more funny/grabbing characters have small parts (no innuendo intended) – Gary Busey for example. They’ve got David Hasselhoff in there portraying himself, except he’s not. He’s essentially doing a parody of himself which isn’t quite the same thing. I actually quite like the Hoff’s addition to this movie, even though i don’t think it will turn it around for folks who just want horror.
The effects are roughly on par with that of the original’s IE: more than fine. Indeed the piranha’s themselves look just as nasty and tyrannizing as they did before. The gore level is roughly about on par with the original too though it doesn’t come off as being as inventive. They’re really walking down the trodden path in this regard SPOILER! OK one guy gets his dick chewed on when the piranha comes out of his girlfriend’s vagina. Or a big fat guy gets his asshole torn into (which i did find funny) and has to get another guy to help pull it out. All of that is very good but it doesn’t seem very plausible and indeed it doesn’t come off as nerve-jangling as it should be.
Really Piranha 3DD is only a movie i would recommend to lovers of schlocky fishy antics, everybody else had best go look for something else. If you haven’t seen the original make sure you do!
Piranha 3DD is a fun and gory horror movie that delivers on its promise of gruesome kills and plenty of nudity. The 3D effects are well done and add to the already chaotic atmosphere. The acting is campy and over-the-top, but that’s part of the charm. If you’re a fan of horror comedies, then you’ll definitely enjoy this movie.
Synopsis
After the events at Lake Victoria, the pre-historic school of bloodthirsty piranhas make their way into a newly opened waterpark.
The park’s owner, Chet (David Hasselhoff), does not take the threat seriously, even when his daughter, Maddy ( Danielle Panabaker), expresses her concerns. When the piranhas begin attacking the park’s visitors, Chet finally takes action, but it may be too late.
With the help of her new friend, Baz (Chris Zylka), Maddy must find a way to stop the piranhas before they destroy the waterpark and everyone in it.
