The Rig (2010) Review

The Rig is a 2010 American disaster thriller film directed by Peter Berg and starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Djimon Hounsou. The film is set aboard an offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico, where a group of workers are struggling to survive after a massive explosion.

The Rig is a gripping and suspenseful film that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The acting is top-notch, and the visual effects are simply amazing. The story is also very well-written, and it’s clear that Berg put a lot of thought into making this movie.

The Rig is far from being an original movie, not only because of it’s premise but also in it’s execution. There is more than a little borrowing going on from Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien. Sadly most of the qualities that made that movie great are missing here. Firstly, the production value is very low, it feels almost like an indie movie. There’s no huge special effect scenes and probably just as well cause i couldn’t see them turning out too great. The creatures, which you hardly ever get to see, are done reasonably well, nothing great but better than a lot of other imitators in this regard. There isn’t as much gore as i would have liked to have seen but what is there is decent enough i guess. We get to slashing, de-bowelings etc. Pity there wasn’t more.

The acting quality is just woeful. They’ve got William Forsythe and Art LaFleur in there and yes they put in they’re usual solid performances but everybody else is just terrible. It hurts the movie to be honest. I often find good quality acting can bring a mediocre, hum drum flick up a step or two, shame they couldn’t have got better in this regard. The camera work leaves something to be desired also. It feels somewhat amateurish and again, had this aspect been covered better i think the movie as whole would have been a lot stronger.

The Rig isn’t scary, nor is there any really tension, in fact it’s predictable and downright boring at times. I really can’t recommend this one at all. It has very little about it that’s any good (apart from the decent-ish creature design), this one is total crap. Simply put: Avoid!

Overall, The Rig is an excellent film that is sure to entertain. If you’re looking for a good thriller, this is definitely the movie for you.
